Amer Deghayes (born 1995) was an al-Nusra Front fighter from the United Kingdom. He was the older brother of Abdullah Deghayes and Jaffar Deghayes, two fellow al-Nusra fighters, and he was the nephew of Libyan al-Qaeda member Omar Deghayes, who was held at Guantanamo Bay.

Biography[]

Amer Deghayes was born in 1995 in Brighton, London, England to a family of Sunni Muslim Libyans. He was the son of Abubaker Deghayes, nephew of al-Qaeda member Omar Deghayes, and he was two years older than his brother Abdullah and four years older than his youngest brother Jaffar. Amer went to school in London and liked creativity, design, swimming, and other typical hobbies, but he later decided to go to fight in Syria with his brothers. The three brothers joined the al-Nusra Front and fought in the Syrian Civil War against the Syrian Arab Army, and Amer was wounded in the battle that Abdullah was killed in. In the summer of 2014, Amer appeared in a VICE News documentary about his life in Syria while fighting for jihad; just a few months later, his youngest brother Jaffar, who was only 17, was killed in action at Aleppo after arriving in the country to join his brothers.
