Amelia Court House

Amelia Court House is the county seat of Amelia County, Virginia. Amelia County, founded in 1734, was named for Princess Amelia of Great Britain, and the area around Amelia Court House became a popular spa destination due to its wealth of mineral springs. By the 1860s, the Richmond and Danville Railroad served the town, and, from 4 to 5 April 1865, Robert E. Lee stayed at Amelia Court House while awaiting supplies from Richmond amid his westward retreat towards Appomattox. Amelia Court House was a hub of mining into the 20th century, and the town became known for its "Amelia Day" festivities. In 2010, Amelia had a population of 1,099 people, and the county was a Republican stronghold.
