Ambrose Marechal

Ambrose Marechal (28 August 1764-29 January 1828) was Archbishop of Baltimore from 14 July 1817 to 29 January 1828, succeeding Leonard Neale and preceding James Whitfield.

Biography[]

Ambrose Marechal was born in Ingre, Kingdom of France in 1764, and he was ordained a Catholic priest in 1792. That same year, he travelled to Baltimore, Maryland in the United States during the chaos of the French Revolution, and he offered his first mass there. In 1801, he became a member of the staff of Georgetown College, and he was recalled to France in 1803 to become a teacher. In 1817, he became Coadjutor Bishop of Baltimore under Leonard Neale, and he succeeded Neale as Archbishop on his death that same year. He died in 1828 after falling ill on a return trip from Canada.
