Amber Rudd (born 1 August 1963) was a Conservative Party MP for Hastings and Rye from 6 May 2010 to 6 November 2019, succeeding Michael Foster and preceding Sally-Ann Hart.
Biography[]
Amber Rudd was born in Marylebone, London, England in 1963, the tenth cousin once removed of Queen Elizabeth II. She worked for an investment company before standing as a Conservative Party candidate for the constituency of Liverpool Garston in 2005; in 2010, she was elected the Conservative MP for Hastings and Rye. She was a One-nation conservative who supported economic liberalism and social liberalism, and she served as Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change from 2015 to 2016, supporting climate change mitigation through the use of renewable energy. She went on to serve as Home Secretary from 2016 to 2018 and as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and Minister for Women and Equalities from 2018 to 2019. In 2018, she resigned as Home Secretary over the Windrush scandal during Theresa May's premiership, and, on 7 September 2019, she resigned as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and as Minister for Women and Equalities due to her disillusionment with Prime Minister Boris Johnson's handling of Brexit and due to her opposition to Johnson's expulsion of 21 Conservative MPs from the party. She stood down at the 2019 election.
