Ambachew Mekonnen

Ambachew Mekonnen (1971-22 June 2019) was President of the Amhara Region of Ethiopia from 8 March to 22 June 2019, succeeding Gedu Andargachew and preceding Laike Ayalew.

Biography[]

Ambachew Mekonnen was born in Gayint, Begemder Province, Ethiopia in 1971 to a family of farmers. He joined the Ethiopian People's Democratic Movement during the Ethiopian Civil War and worked for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and as an infrastructure advisor before becoming President of the Amhara Region on 8 March 2019. On 22 June 2019, he and his advisor were killed by a hit squad during a failed nationalist coup in the region.
