Amaziah Bailey James (1 July 1812-6 July 1883) was a member of the US House of Representatives (R-NY 19) from 4 March 1877 to 3 March 1881, succeeding William A. Wheeler and preceding Abraham X. Parker.
Biography[]
Amaziah Bailey James was born in Stephentown, New York in 1812, and he was raised in Sweden and Batavia. He became a publisher in Ogdensburg, co-owning a Whig newspaper, and he rose to the rank of major-general in the state militia. He went n to practice law in Ogdensburg, serve as a state supreme court justice from 1854 to 1876, serve on the New York Court of Appeals in 1861 to 1869, and serve in the US House of Representatives from 1877 to 1881. He died in 1883.
