Amanikhatashan of Cyrenaica

Amanikhatashan of Cyrenaica (died 260 BC) was King of Cyrenaica from 265 BC to 260 BC, succeeding Neferukekashta and preceding Viriathus.

Biography[]

Amanikhatashan was born in Cyrene, Cyrenaica to a Hellenized Libyan family, and he rose in the ranks of the Cyrenaican aristocracy after its secession from Ptolemaic Egypt in 272 BC. In 265 BC, he succeeded Neferukekashta as ruler of Cyrenaica after she died during a failed invasion of Egypt, and Amanikhatashan himself tried to lead a counterattack against the Egyptians. He conquered the city of Ammonium (Siwa Oasis), only to himself be besieged there by Pharaoh Ptolemy II Philadelphus' army in 260 BC. Amanikhatashan died during the Egyptian recapture of the city.
