Amani al-Khatahtbeh

Amani al-Khatahtbeh (6 May 1992-) was an American author, tech entrepreneur, and Democratic political candidate from New Jersey. She grew up in both New Jersey and Jordan, and she chose to wear her hijab to take a stand against Islamophobia following 9/11. Al-Khatahtbah founded the MuslimGirl.com online magazine in 2009 and served as its editor-in-chief, and, on 4 April 2020, she announced her candidacy for NJ-06 in the US House of Representatives, challenging longtime Democratic incumbent Frank Pallone in the primary. She ran as a progressive who supported Medicare for all, the Green New Deal, student debt cancellation, free public university education, criminal justice reform, and raising the federal minimum wage to $15. However, she garnered controversy for spreading anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and for claiming that 9/11 was an “inside job.” She lost by an overwhelming margin.
