Alwin of Canterbury was an Anglo-Saxon Roman Catholic monk who lived in Canterbury, Kent during the late 9th century AD. In 875, he and his sworn-to-silence brother, Brother Quiescis, came across the Viking warrior Eivor in Canterbury, and, through Alwin's translation of his gesticulations, Quiescis challenged Eivor to flyting. Alwin delivered Quiescis' verses, but Eivor defeated Quiescis, leading to Alwin - claiming to be an impartial observer - giving Eivor his prize silver and translating Quiescis' rhyming plea for Eivor to go away now that he had won the day.
