Alvin "A.J." Not Afraid was chairman of the Crow tribe of Montana from 2016. In 2018, he endorsed the Republican US Senate candidate Matt Rosendale, and he also supported Donald Trump because of the GOP's stances on energy development, self sufficiency, and other issues. His endorsement of Trump was controversial among members of his tribe, as he had not consulted the tribal legislature before endorsing Rosendale on behalf of the tribe, and he also attracted controversy for nearly being arrested after withholding pay from 15 judicial branch employees.
