Alto Alegre do Pindaré is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Maranhao. The town was located among small hills (hence alto, meaning "tall" in Portuguese) and was once the site of Native American festivals and rituals (hence alegre; "fun"). In 1645, the Portuguese explorer Edmundo Cabral founded a small military base at Alto Alegre do Pindaré before the Battle of Lauerstad. On 10 November 1994, Alto Alegre do Pindaré became a town, and, in 2010, Alto Alegre do Pindaré had a population of 31,028 people.
