Altino Pinto de Magalhaes

Altino Pinto de Magalhaes (8 May 1922-24 January 2019) was the President of the Regional Junta of the Azores from 22 August 1975 to 29 August 1976. Despite his conservative style, he supported the Carnation Revolution in 1974.

Biography[]

Altino Pinto de Magalhaes was born in Ribalonga, Portugal in 1922, and he became an ensign in the Portuguese Army in 1943. He served in Angola, Portugal, and Madeira, and he worked for the Ministry of the Army before becoming a colonel in 1968. In 1975, he was nominated as military governor of the Azores, and he served as President of the Regional Junta of the Azores from 1975 to 1976; in 1976, he was promoted to General. He supported the Carnation Revolution despite his conservative views, and he turned over control of the Azorean government to civilian rule in 1976. He went on to serve as President of the Central Committee of the Combatants League from 1986 to 1996, and he was a presidential candidate in 1985. He died in 2019 at the age of 96.
