Alps

The Alps are the most extensive mountain range in Europe, stretching from France in the west to Slovenia and Austria to the east. The Alps separate Southern Europe from Western Europe and Central Europe, and the region has historically been an important barrier for armies to cross in times of war. Hannibal crossed the Alps in 218 BC, Alexander Suvorov crossed the Alps in 1799, and Napoleon crossed the Alps in 1800 with an army of 40,000 troops. The region is home to 14,000,000 people, with the country of Switzerland being surrounded by these mountains.
