Alonzo Garcelon

Alonzo Garcelon (6 May 1813-8 December 1906) was the Democratic Governor of Maine from 8 January 1879 to 7 January 1880, succeeding Seldon Connor and preceding Daniel F. Davis.

Biography[]

Alonzo Garcelon was born in Lewiston, Maine in 1813, the son of French Huguenot parents. He became a lawyer, founded the Lewiston Journal in 1847, served in the State House from 1853 to 1854 as a Free Soiler and from 1857 to 1858, served in the State Senate from 1855 to 1856, left the Republican Party over Reconstruction and became a Democrat, served as Governor from 1879 to 1880, and served as Mayor of Lewiston from 1883 to 1884. He died in 1906.
