Flag of Alodia

Alodia was a medieval kingdom in central and southern Sudan which existed from the 6th century and 1500, with Soba (near present-day Khartoum) serving as its capital. Alodia emerged from the ashes of the Kingdom of Kush, and it converted to Christianity in 580 AD, the last of the three Nubian kingdoms to do so. From the 9th to 12th centuries, Alodia surpassed its northern neighbor, Makuria, in military power and economic prosperity. However, Alodia began to decline from the 1100s to the 1200s due to invasions from South Sudan, and shifting trade routes and plagues contributed to Alodia's decline. In 1500, Alodia fell to the Funj people, who established the Funj Sultanate.
