The Alliance for the Future of Austria was a national conservative political party in Austria which was founded by Jorg Haider in 2005 as a moderate splinter from the far-right Freedom Party of Austria. It won seven seats at the 2006 election, taking the FPO's place in coalition with the conservative OVP party. In 2008, the BZO won 21 seats, but, thirteen days after the election, Haider died in a car crash. Josef Bucher became the BZO's new leader, adopting economic liberalism, social conservatism, defending the middle class and free markets, supporting a flat tax, the privatization of utilities, large reductions in bureaucracy and government debt, the introduction of a "green card" for immigrants, the reintroduction of tuition fees, the abolition of conscription, and moderate Euroscepticism.
