Allan Shivers

Robert Allan Shivers (5 October 1907-14 January 1985) was the Democratic Governor of Texas from 11 July 1949 to 15 January 1957, succeeding Beauford H. Jester and preceding Price Daniel.

Biography[]

Robert Allan Shivers was born in Lufkin, Angelina County, Texas in 1907, and he became a lawyer in 1933 and served in the State Senate from 1935 to 1947, as Lieutenant Governor from 1947 to 1949, and as Governor from 1949 to 1957, succeeding Governor Beauford H. Jester on his death in office. He became so popular that he was listed as both the Democratic and Republican candidate for Governor in 1952, and his Democratic name handily defeated his Republican name. He became infamous for his corruption and conservatism, backing Dwight D. Eisenhower over Adlai Stevenson II in 1952. Shivers led the conservative "Shivercats" faction of the Texas Democratic Party, and he supported segregationism. Shivers retired in 1957 and died in Austin in 1985.
