Aligern (506-) was a Gothic statesman of the Ostrogothic Kingdom in Italy who later defected to the Byzantines.
Biography[]
Aligern was born in 506 AD, the son of Fritigern and the younger brother of Teia. In 552, King Totila appointed Aligern as one of the commanders of Cumae, defending the city against the Byzantines in 554, even after both Teia and Totila had been slain in battle. When the Franks invaded Italy, Aligern was persuaded to surrender to the Byzantines, and, at Caesena, he failed to convince the Franks to halt their march on Cumae. At the Battle of the Volturnus in 554, he fought alongside the Byzantines, assisting them in their victory over the invaders.
