
Ali az-Zahir (20 June 1005-13 June 1036) was Caliph of the Fatimid Caliphate from 1021 to 1035, succeeding al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah and preceding al-Mustansir Billah.
Biography[]
Abu'l Hasan Ali az-Zahir li A'zaz li Din-illah was the son of the Fatimid Egyptian caliph al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah, and he succeeded his father in 1021. From 1023 to 1025, Egypt was plagued by famine and sickness, and, from 1024 to 1029, the Bedouin rebelled in Palestine and Syria. Anushtakin al-Dizbari crushed the uprising soon after. Ali ibn Ahmad Jarjarai seized the title of Vizier in 1028, and he rebuilt the destroyed Church of the Holy Sepulchre to improve relations with the Byzantines. Ali died of the plague in 1036.
