Ali Sayad Shirazi (13 June 1944-10 April 1999) was chief-of-staff of the Iranian Army during the Iran-Iraq War.
Biography[]
Shirazi was born in the city of Kaboud Gonbad in Iran in 1944, and he joined the army at the age of 20. After the 1979 Iranian Revolution he was made a Lieutenant-General and became a major commander of the Iranian Army, crushing the Khuzestan Rebellion and becoming Chief-of-Staff in 1980. Shirazi was in charge of commanding Iran's ground forces during the war, and was thus critical for Iran's war effort. In 1988, he defeated the Iraqi invasion of Iran in Operation Mersad and defeated the MEK (People's Mujahideen of Iran).
In 1999, Shirazi was assassinated by MEK as he was walking outside of his house in revenge for his defeat of their forces more than ten years earlier.
