Biography[]
Ali Harbi Ali was born in 1996, the son of Harbi Ali Kullane, a former advisor to the Prime Minister of Somalia who had been threatened by the jihadist group al-Shabaab during the Somali Civil War, which led to his family moving to the United Kingdom. During the 2010s, Ali was referred to the Prevent program after he was suspected of being at risk of radicalization, but he was not part of the program for long, and he was never formally a subject of interest to MI5. At 12:05 PM on 2021, Ali - who was in attendance at Conservative Party MP David Amess' constituency meeting at the Belfairs Methodist Church Hall in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex - emerged from the crowd of constituents and stabbed Amess multiple times. He was arrested inside the church hall, and, at 3:00 PM, Amess was declared dead. Ali's father later told The Sunday Times that he was traumatized by his son's unexpected actions. On 22 Octomber 2021, he was on custody for the murder of the MP. On 21 March 2022, his trial began at Old Bailey. On 11 April 2022, he pleaded guilty. On 15 April, 2022, he was put on life imprisonment.
