
Ali Antar (1937-13 January 1986) was the Minister of Defense and Vice-President of South Yemen who led the 1986 coup against Ali Nasir Muhammad's government. He was killed in the fighting, which led to the South Yemen Civil War breaking out.
Biography[]
Ali Antar was born in 1937 in Khraibeh, Dalea, Yemen, and he served as the Defense Minister and Vice-President of South Yemen under Ali Nasir Muhammad. When the Yemeni Socialist Party was divided, Antar decided to lead a military coup against the hardline dictator Ali Nasir Muhammad, but he was killed in fighting in the Central Command building on 13 January 1986. The ensuing South Yemen Civil War would lead to a worse South Yemeni government taking power.
