Alfredo Poveda

Alfredo Poveda (24 January 1926-7 June 1990) was President of Ecuador from 11 January 1976 to 10 August 1979, succeeding Guillermo Rodriguez Lara and preceding Jaime Roldos Aguilera.

Biography[]

Alfredo Poveda was born in Ambato, Ecuador in 1926, and he served in the Ecuadorian Navy before rising to command the First Naval Zone and the Marine Infantry Battalion. In 1976, he overthrew Guillermo Rodriguez Lara's military regime and installed another in power, adopting a progressive constitution in 1979 and holding multi-party elections won by Jaime Roldos Aguilera. He died in 1990.
