Alfredo "Don Capone" Gomez Lopez was a Colombian contraband smuggler.
Biography[]
Alfredo Gomez Lopez was a prominent Colombian smuggler, and he earned the nickname "El Hombre Marlboro" for smuggling cigarettes and "Don Capone" for his American Mafia-like activities. In 1974, he took Pablo Escobar and Gustavo Gaviria under his wing as bodyguards, and they would prove themselves to be worthy of being promoted to partners after they assisted him with smuggling his goods across Colombia. However, Gomez and Escobar argued over the cocaine business; Gomez did not want to enter the business due to its risks, while Escobar saw potential in the industry. In 1976, Escobar and Gaviria became freelancers after arguing with Gomez, but they would continue to have a close relationship.
