
Alfred Cumming (4 September 1802 – 9 October 1873) was Governor of the Utah Territory (D) from 12 April 1858 to 17 May 1861, succeeding Brigham Young and preceding John W. Dawson.
Biography[]
Alfred Cumming was born in Augusta, Georgia, United States on 4 September 1802. Cumming served as Mayor of Augusta from 1836 to 1837 as a Democratic Party member, and he later served as sutler to Zachary Taylor during the Mexican-American War and as superintendent of the Upper Missouri Indian Superintendency. In 1858, President James Buchanan appointed him Governor of the Utah Territory, replacing the rebellious Mormon leader Brigham Young. In 1861, Cumming returned to Washington DC, being replaced by John W. Dawson. His nephew Alfred Cumming served in the Confederate States Army during the war.
