Alfred Conkling

Alfred Conkling (12 October 1789-5 February 1874) was a member of the US House of Representatives (DR-NY 14) from 4 March 1821 to 3 March 1823, succeeding John Fay and preceding Henry R. Storrs.

Biography[]

Alfred Conkling was born in Amagansett, New York in 1789, and he practiced law in Johnstown and Canajoharie before serving as a district attorney, in Congress, as a federal district court judge from 1825 to 1852, and as Ambassador to Mexico from 1852 to 1853. He resumed his private practice in Omaha, Nebraska from 1853 to 1861 before becoming a writer in Rochester and Geneseo, New York and then at Utica until his death. His sons Frederick A. Conkling and Roscoe Conkling followed him into politics.
