Alfonso d'Avalos (1502-31 March 1546) was an Italian condottiero in the service of Spain during the Italian Wars. He served as Governor of the Duchy of Milan from 1538 to 1546, succeeding Marino Caracciolo and preceding Ferrante Gonzaga.
Biography[]
Alfonso d'Avalos was born to an Aragonese family on the Italian island of Ischia, the cousin of Fernando d'Avalos. He inherited his cousin's titles after he died in 1525, and he fought under Hugo de Moncada during the War of the League of Cognac. In 1535, he took part in the conquest of Tunis, and he would later serve as Governor of the Duchy of Milan from 1538 to 1546. In 1544, he was defeated by France at the Battle of Ceresole, and he died two years later.
