Alfonso III "the Great" of Asturias (848-December 910) was the King of Asturias from 866 to 910, succeeding Ordonno I of Asturias and preceding Fruela II of Asturias; King of Leon from 866 to 910, succeeding Ordono I and preceding Garcia I of Leon; and King of Galicia from 866 to 910, preceding Ordonno II of Leon.
Biography[]
Alfonso was from the House of de Cantabria, and was of Visigothic Christian descent. He succeeded his father Ordonno I of Leon as king of Asturias in 866, and he consolidated the strength of his country while the Umayyad Caliphate weakened. In 867 he defeated a Basque rebellion and later a Galician one, and in 869 he made an alliance with the Kingdom of Pamplona. In 909, his sons Fruela, Ordono, and Garcia rebelled and forced him to abdicate; Garcia became king of Leon, Ordono became king of Galicia, and Fruela ruled Asturias. Alfonso died the next year, beginning a series of internecine struggles.
