Alexis Krot was a judge of the Michigan 31st District Court. Previously a magistrate and an assistant city attorney in Hamtramck, she was appointed to her judgeship by the Republican Governor Rick Snyder in 2016, and she won re-election in 2020. On 10 January 2022, she became infamous for berating a 72-year-old cancer patient, Burhan Chowdhury, for failing to maintain his Detroit property, in spite of his cancer treatments making him too weak to keep his yard in good shape. Krot cruelly said that Chowdhury should be ashamed of himself and said that she would give him jail time if possible; she then issued him a $100 fine with 1 February as the final payment date. Over 169,000 people signed a petition calling for her removal after Chowdhury's case made national news thanks to the influence of social media.
