Alexandre Bontemps (1626-1701) was the Valet de Chambre of King Louis XIV of France at his palace in Versailles.
Biography[]
Alexandre Bontemps was the son of Louis XIII of France's surgeon, and he succeeded his father as valet to the king in 1659. Bontemps was an amiable figure who was entirely devoted to King Louis XIV of France, controlling the palaces of Versailles and Marly, commanding the Swiss Guard, the household of the Dauphin, and holding the titles of Count and Marquis. As Governor of Versailles, he controlled all activities in the city of Versailles, and he also managed the activities of Louis' courtiers. Bontemps was key in controlling the king's security and managing his household until his death in 1701.
