Alexander Raleigh

Alexander Raleigh (born 1785) was an American Methodist reverend who served as Pastor of the Five Points Mission during the American Civil War. A reformer and a Republican, he arrived in the Five Points in 1862 and oversaw the shutdown of the Old Brewery (where many poor Irish immigrants squatted), claiming that the children were living in squalor and misery, and evicting the poor Irishmen as work began on converting the brewery into a Protestant mission. The mission hosted charitable fundraisers such as an 1862 dance to raise funds for the relief of the urban poor, and it survived into the 21st century.
