
Alexander Mitchell (17 October 1817 – 19 April 1887) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-WI 1) from 4 March 1871 to 3 March 1873 (succeeding Halbert E. Paine and preceding Charles Grandison Williams) and from WI-4 from 4 March 1873 to 3 March 1875 (succeeding Charles A. Eldredge and preceding William P. Lynde).
Biography[]
Alexander Mitchell was born in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland in 1817, and he immigrated to the United States in 1839 and became a banker in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He served as a railroad president from 1864 to 1887 and became the richest person in Wisconsin, and he went on to serve in the US House of Representatives from 1871 to 1875. He was the father of John L. Mitchell and the grandfather of Billy Mitchell.
