Alexander McNutt MS

Alexander McNutt (3 January 1802-22 October 1848) was the Democratic Governor of Mississippi from 8 January 1838 to 10 January 1842, succeeding Charles Lynch and preceding Tilghman Tucker.

Biography[]

Alexander McNutt was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia in 1802, and he moved to Jackson, Mississippi during the 1820s. He served as a Vicksburg selectman before serving as a Democratic state legislator and founding the state library and penitentiary. He went on to serve as Governor from 1838 to 1842, and he served as a Democratic presidential elector in 1848, dying that same year.
