Alexander Long

Alexander Long (24 December 1816-28 November 1886) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-OH 2) from 4 March 1863 to 3 March 1865, succeeding John A. Gurley and preceding Rutherford B. Hayes.

Biography[]

Alexander Long was born in Greenville, Pennsylvania, and he settled in Hamilton County, Ohio in 1838. He taught at local schools from 1840 to 1848, and he became a lawyer in 1845. He served in the State House from 1848 to 1850, and he went on to serve in the US House of Representatives from 1863 to 1865. He was originally a "Free Soil" Democrat, but he later opposed emancipation and suffrage for African-Americans. He died in 1886.
