Alexander Gilmore Cattell (12 February 1816 – 8 April 1894) was a Republican US Senator from New Jersey from 19 September 1866 to 3 March 1871, succeeding John P. Stockton and preceding Frederick T. Frelinghuysen.

Biography[]

Alexander Gilmore Cattell was born in Salem, Salem County, New Jersey in 1816, and he worked as a merchant until 1846, when he entered politics as a Whig. He served in the General Assembly in 1840, moved to Philadelphia in 1846 to engage in business and banking (serving on the Common Council from 1848 to 1854), serving as President of the Corn Exchange Bank from 1858 to 1871, moved to Merchantville, Camden County, New Jersey in 1863, served in the US Senate from 1866 to 1871, served on the Civil Service Commission from 1871 to 1873 and as a financial agent in London from 1873 to 1874, served on the New Jersey Board of Tax Assessors from 1884 to 1891, served on the State Board of Education from 1891 to 1894, and died in Jamestown, New York in 1894 at the age of 78.
