
Alexander Caldwell (1 March 1830-19 May 1917) was a Republican US Senator from Kansas from 4 March 1871 to 24 March 1873, succeeding Edmund G. Ross and preceding Robert Crozier.
Biography[]
Alexander Caldwell was born in Drakes Ferry, Pennsylvania in 1830, and he served in the Mexican-American War before moving to Columbia, Pennsylvania in 1848 and becoming a banker. He moved to Leavenworth, Kansas in 1861, and he served in the US Senate from 1871 to 1873, when he was expelled for bribery and corruption. He became a weapons and carriages manufacturer and bank president after leaving office, and he died in 1917.
