Alessandro Pirzio Biroli (23 July 1877-20 May 1962) was a general of Italy during World War II.
Biography[]
Alessandro Pirzio Biroli was born on 23 July 1877 in Bologna, Italy. He gained a silver medal in the team sabre event in the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, and in 1918 he became the commander of the 8th Bersaglieri Regiment of the Italian Army during World War I. From 1921 to 1927 he was the head of a military mission to Ecuador and he led the Eritrean Corps during the Second Italo-Abyssinian War of 1935-36. He governed Amhara Province from 1936 to 1937 and in 1941 he became the leader of the Italian 9th Army. From 1941 to 1943 he was the military Governor of Montenegro and crushed a partisan uprising during World War II, killing 50 hostages for every Italian soldier killed and 10 for every Italian wounded. After the war, he was not tried for his war crimes.
