Alcee Hastings (5 September 1936-6 April 2021) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-FL 23) from 3 January 1993 to 3 January 2013 (preceding Debbie Wasserman Schultz) and from FL 20 from 3 January 2013 to 6 April 2021 (succeeding Wasserman Schultz and preceding Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick).
Biography[]
Alcee Hastings was born in Altamonte Springs, Florida in 1936, and he became a lawyer in 1963. In 1970, he launched a failed run for the US Senate as a Democratic Party member, but he served as a Judge of the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida from 2 November 1979 to 20 October 1989, preceding Federico Moreno. He was impeached and removed for accepting a bribe, but he was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1992. Hastings was again the source of controversy for claiming that Sarah Palin cared more about "toting guns and stripping moose" than about Jews and African-Americans, that he spent taxpayer money on a Lexus lease, for sexual harassment allegations, and for paying salaries and fees to family members. He died of pancreatic cancer in 2021 at the age of 84.
