Albert Mondego 2

Albert Mondego, Comte de Morcerf (1815-) was a French aristocrat and the Count of Morcerf from 1831, succeeding Fernand Mondego.

Biography[]

Albert Mondego was born in Marseille, France in 1815, the illegitimate son of the French sailor Edmond Dantès and his Catalan wife Mercédès Herrera. His father was wrongfully imprisoned for high treason through the intrigue of his former friend Fernand Mondego, who used Dantès' absence to make a move on Mercédès. Mercédès, pregnant with Dantès' son, hurriedly married Mondego a month later, and Mondego believed that his son Albert was merely born premature. Albert was raised in Paris after his father inherited the title of Count of Morcerf, and he had a privileged upbringing. In 1831, his parents allowed him to join several peers on a trip to Rome in time for the carnival, only for Mondego to be kidnapped by Luigi Vampa's pirates at the behest of Edmond Dantès, who, as the "Count of Monte Cristo", rescued Albert from the kidnappers; he was quietly impressed by Albert's defiance in the face of potential murder. A grateful Albert invited Monte Cristo to meet his family, and Monte Cristo used this introduction to spy on Albert's father and trigger the arrests of Count Mondego's allies Jean-Francois Villefort and Philippe Danglars, whose arrests implicated Count Mondego in the crimes that led to Dantès' imprisonment from 1815 to 1828. Count Mondego made plans to flee the country, and Villefort's wife Valentina told Albert that Monte Cristo had used him as a dupe in oreer to infiltrate his family. An infuriated Albert followed his father to his ruined estate at Bouchon, where he prevented Monte Cristo from slaying him by stepping in with his sword. Shortly after, Mercédès arrived and told Albert that he was Monte Cristo/Dantès' son, causing Albert to disappointedly ask Count Mondego why he had let him fight his true father without interceding. Mondego insulted Albert's mother before accidentally shooting her while intending to shoot Dantès, and Dantès went on to duel Mondego and slay him. Dantès went on to marry Mercédès and adopt Albert as his own son; Albert inherited the title of Comte de Montcerf.
