Albert V of Bavaria (29 February 1528-24 October 1579) was Duke of Bavaria from 7 March 1550 to 24 October 1579, succeeding William IV and preceding William V.
Biography[]
Albert von Wittelsbach was born in Munich, Bavaria on 29 February 1528, the son of William IV of Bavaria and Marie of Baden-Sponheim. He received a Catholic education at Ingolstadt, and he married Archduchess Anna of Austria in 1546, ending the rivalry between Austria and Bavaria. He succeeded to the Duchy of Bavaria in 1550 and became a leader of the German Counter-Reformation, having his advisors repress Protestantism in his realm. He built Dachau Palace in 1577, and he died two years later.
