Albert Margai (10 October 1910-18 December 1980) was Prime Minister of Sierra Leone from 28 April 1964 to 21 March 1967, succeeding Milton Margai and preceding Siaka Stevens.
Biography[]
Albert Margai was born on 10 October 1910 in Gbangbatoke, Sierra Leone, and from 1931 to 1944 he was a nurse like his brother Milton Margai, later becoming a lawyer in 1948. In 1957, Margai was elected as a Member of Parliament for Moyamba, and in 1962 he was appointed Minister of Finance when his brother became Prime Minister of an independent Sierra Leone. After his brother's death, Margai became the new Prime Minister, and he sought to establish a single-party state to stop ethnic differences from being accentuated. Margai's government was corrupt, and in 1967 he was overthrown by Siaka Stevens in a coup. He died at the age of 70 in 1980, and his son Charles Margai became a politician.
