Albert Barese was the paternal cousin of Larry Barese, and he became a soldier in his brother's crew of the DiMeo crime family. He became the acting capo of his cousin's crew after he was imprisoned in 1999 while facing RICO charges, and Albert became known as a good earner. In 2000, Barese was approached by the disloyal capo Richie Aprile, who sought to recruit Barese into a conspiracy to overthrow Tony Soprano. However, Barese refused to help Aprile, and this decision influenced Junior Soprano's decision to inform Tony Soprano about the plot rather than support it. In 2002, Barese entered into a war with fellow capo Ralph Cifaretto over garbage routes, and Soprano ensured that no more fires were set by either side, although beatings continued until Cifaretto disappeared. Barese later deduced that Tony Soprano had killed Cifaretto in an act of revenge after Cifaretto killed Soprano's prize horse Pie-O-My in a stable fire to collect insurance. Albert Barese allowed for his cousin to return to being capo after he was released from prison.
