Alan la Zouche

Alan la Zouche (1205-1270) was an Anglo-Norman general.

Biography[]

Descended from a Breton noble family, Alan la Zouche became a justice minister in Wales and Ireland at different times. During the Second Barons' War he fought for King Henry III of England and was taken prisoner in the 1264 Battle of Lewes, but escaped from the Baron's Alliance prison.

In 1270, while persecuting John de Warenne for estate issues, Warenne and some of his men attacked La Zouche and mortally wounded him. In the end, Warenne agreed to pay the La Zouches, but Alan died of his wounds.
