Alan Paine

Alan Paine was the Labour Party MP for Tyne Bridge West from 15 October 1964 to 3 May 1979, preceding Claudia Seabrook. He was elected with the help of the local Labour machine under Austin Donohue, who rode around the city in a sound truck calling on the people to vote for Labour. In 1979, the Trotskyist Labour activist Nicky Hutchinson challenged Paine during the Labour primary ahead of the year's general election, and Hutchinson was ultimately chosen as the Labour candidate; he lost to Seabrook in the general election.
