Alan II of Brittany

Alan II Barbetorte of Brittany (900-952) was Duke of Brittany from 938 to 952, preceding Drogo.

Biography[]

Alan was born in 900, the son of Count Mathedoi I of Poher. He and his father took refuge at the court of King Edward the Elder of Wessex after the Norwegian Vikings conquered Brittany, and he was raised alongside Aethelstan of England. He became a renowned hunter and a respected warrior, and, in 936, Father Jean de Landevennec invited the exiled Bretons to return to expoit the weakness of Upper Brittany's ruler Incon. Alan collected a fleet and landed at Dol, and he reclaimed Nantes after slaying Incon in battle. He completed his victory at the Battle of Trans-la-Foret in 938, and he became Duke of Brittany. He became a close ally of King Louis IV of France and paid homage to him in 942, and he died in 952.
