Alan Cranston

Alan MacGregor Cranston (19 June 1914-31 December 2000) was a Democratic US Senator from California from 3 January 1969 to 3 January 1993, succeeding Thomas Kuchel and preceding Barbara Boxer.

Biography[]

Alan MacGregor Cranston was born in Palo Alto, California in 1914, and he worked as an international news correspondent and magazine editor and writer before serving in the US Army during World War II. After the war, he became involved in Democratic politics and supported global cooperation and denuclearization. Cranston served as State Controller from 1959 to 1967 before serving in the US Senate from 1969 to 1993, and he briefly sought the presidency in 1984, advocating for a nuclear freeze. He retired in 1993 and lived in Los Altos, California until his death in 2000.
