He became Governor of Khorasan in 1200 under his cousin, Sultan Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad, and, in 1202, his cousin Sultan Mu'izz al-Din Muhammad appointed him Governor of Ghur, Gharchistan, and Zamindawar, in which position Ala al-Din Ali campaigned against the Ismailis of Quhistan. In 1206, after being deposed and imprisoned by Sultan Ghiyath al-Din Mahmud, Ala al-Din Ali and the ghulam Tajuddin Yildoz overthrew Ghiyath al-Din in 1214, and Ala al-Din Ali became Sultan of the Ghurid dynasty. A yaer later, the Khwarazmian sultan Muhammad II of Khwarazm invaded Ghur and captured Ala al-Din Ali, who was allowed to live in honorable exile in Khwarazm until his death. The remnants of the Ghurid dynasty in India would go on to form the Delhi Sultanate.
