Ala Singh (1691-1765) was the Maharaja of Patiala State from 29 March 1761 to 22 Augsut 1765, preceding Amar Singh.
Biography[]
Ala Singh was born in Phul, Punjab in 1691 to a family of Sikh Jats. He became Maharaja of Patiala State in 1761, and he allied himself with the Maratha Confederacy to oppose Ahmad Shah Durrani's invasion of India that same year. However, he was unable to send reinforcements to the Marathi army before the Third Battle of Panipat due to the swelling of the Yamuna river, and the Durranis went on to force Singh to surrender after attacking Barnala. In 1763, Singh founded the city of Patiala, and he conquered Sirhind before his death in 1765.
