Al Wathiq Zakariyya

Al Wathiq Zakariyya (1156-12??) was a general of the Ayyubid Dynasty who was responsible for the capture of Tyre in 1218, Ballbek in 1228, and Aleppo in 1232. Al Wathiq Zakariyya was praised as one of the best generals of Saladin when he was fighting during the Defense of the Crusader States Era (1174-1189), the Third Crusade (1189-1193), and the following wars of Sultan Al-Adil.

Al Wathiq

A hardworking nobleman of the Ayyubid dynasty, he was adopted by Salah ad-Din to aid his career. Zakariyya was extremely loyal to his family, chivalrous, and although he was not pious, he was well-liked by Saladin. In 1218 he gained fame by seizing Tyre and later took Ballbek in 1228. Wathiq took Aleppo in 1232 and held it against a counterattack in 1238 by the Antiochenes. Zakariyya’s military career ended soon after, as he was extremely old by the time of his latest victories.

Al Wathiq Zakariyya married Lotus Umar, a young woman of fitting breed and station.
