Al Quie

Albert Harold Quie (18 September 1923-18 August 2023) was a member of the US House of Representatives (R-MN 1) from 18 February 1958 to 3 January 1979 (succeeding August Andresen and preceding Arlen Erdahl) and the Republican Governor of Minnesota from 4 January 1979 to 3 January 1983 (interrupting Rudy Perpich's terms).

Biography[]

Albert Harold Quie was born in Wheeling Township, Rice County, Minnesota in 1923,, the grandson of Norwegian immigrants. He served in the US Navy during World War II before becoming a dairy farmer, and he served in the state senate from 1955 to 1958, in the US House of Representatives from 1958 to 1979, and as Governor from 1979 to 1983 as a moderate Republican. Quie supported civil rights legislation, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the 24th Amendment (banning poll taxes), and he was considered by Ronald Reagan for his choice of a running mate during the 1980 presidential election. Quie died at his home in Wayzata in 2023.
